Traditions
Tradition is the heartbeat of the St. Thomas culture. Rooted in rich history and carried forward by generations with the help of our faculty, students, parents and HSA, our traditions bring students together in meaningful and memorable ways. From lively, festive celebrations that light up the academic year to heartfelt moments that mark important milestones, these traditions contribute to the proud legacy that defines what it means to be a St. Thomas student.
School Dances
Our school dances and events are more than just music, merriment and moves—they're memorable moments that bring our community together! In the fall, our middle schoolers kick off the year with the Hoe Down, a high-energy western-themed bash complete with a DJ and plenty of boot-scootin’ fun. Our younger students come in costume to the Trunk or Treat to collect candy, but even more impressive is how the parent community takes it up a notch with wildly creative, decked-out cars and costumes. Come spring, students dress their best for the heartwarming Sweetheart Dance, where all girls in K-8th grade are invited to bring a beloved adult guest for a special evening together. The season wraps up with the much-anticipated Middle School Dance, a cherished tradition and the highlight of the year. Students dress up, dance the night away, and capture photos with their friends that they’ll treasure for years to come—especially our 8th graders, marking one of their final celebrations before graduation.

Christmas Season
The holiday season is one of the most magical times of year at St. Thomas. Our traditions bring students, families and staff together in ways that celebrate the spirit of the season. We have Breakfast with Santa, a favorite for all ages! Our parents roll up their sleeves to help cook and serve pancakes, while older students transform our school into a magical Winter Wonderland. Children enjoy crafts, games and of course, a special visit with Santa himself. The Christmas Boutique turns our gym into a festive market filled with handmade treasures and vendor-supported gifts allowing students to hand-pick gifts for their loved ones. We cap it off with a heartwarming performance by our students of carols and holiday classics at our Christmas Concert. We also have Advent Wreath Making for families and opportunities to spread holiday cheer by participating in local caroling events and festive pageants.

Community-Focused Events
Community traditions commence each fall with our Special Persons Day, where we invite grandparents and other loved ones to St. Thomas. The day begins with a special Mass, often celebrated with the Bishop, followed by an opportunity for guests to tour the school and participate in fun-filled classroom activities. Our Veterans Day celebration honors brave men and women who have served in the military—especially those within our school family. Through a heartfelt ceremony we teach students about courage, sacrifice and gratitude, while strengthening the bond between generations. Each spring our beloved Family Picnic brings families together to enjoy food and games. Other events include the St. Thomas Basketball Tournament, dress down days for charity, Field Day, hot cocoa and ice cream socials, movie theater day, an Easter Egg Hunt, pep rallies and marching in Bridgeport's St. Patrick's Day Parade as well as Fairfield's Memorial Day Parade.

Catholic Schools Week
Each day of Catholic Schools Week brings something special—from laughter-filled activities like “Guess the Baby Picture” of a teacher, to exciting school-wide events like our annual Bowling Day, where every grade hits the lanes together for fun and friendly competition. We celebrate all week with themed dress days and class challenges to build school spirit and unity across grades. The week also highlights the heart of who we are, with meaningful service projects that encourage students to give back and support others, as well as a special Mass, where students, staff and families come together to celebrate our shared values.

8th Grade Festivities
8th grade is more than just a final year—it's a time to lead, celebrate and reflect on the journey. The excitement kicks off with the legendary Black and Orange Bowl, where all 8th graders face off against the 7th grade in a spirited flag football game, cheered on by the entire school decked out in Halloween colors. Not long after, the energy ramps up again for the 8th Grade Volleyball Game, a friendly but fierce competition between the two 8th grade homerooms, with the whole student body rallying from the sidelines. As the school year winds down, the tone shifts to one of reflection and celebration during Graduation Week. The entire school community lines the halls to clap out the 8th graders, sending them off with cheers and high-fives. One of the most special moments is Class Night, a memorable evening of dinner, awards and a touching video that looks back on their years together. The journey concludes with participation in the Kindergarten Graduation ceremony (to celebrate their Kindergarten buddies) followed by their own memorable Graduation Ceremony, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next.
