The Golf Team offers students in 5th through 8th grade a unique opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of golf in a fun, supportive and team-based environment. Whether students have been recently introduced to the sport or have significant experience, the team provides instruction and practice sessions that focus on the fundamentals and etiquette of the game. Students learn in small groups, often led by experienced coaches or local golf professionals who foster both skill development and a love for golf.
St. Thomas also offers a Golf Development Program specifically designed for our 4th grade students. These students join our older athletes one day a week at the Carl Dickman Par 3 and also participate in the weekly instruction sessions. They are chaperoned for all play and do not participate in interscholastic tournaments.
The Golf Team and Development Program is held in the fall over seven weeks. All students have the opportunity to continue their practice indoor through an arranged but unsupervised program with the Golf Lounge 18 throughout the winter.
Program Highlights
Twice-Weekly Play: Students participate in up to two rounds of golf at the Carl Dickman Par 3 golf course in Fairfield. Rounds are played on Tuesdays and Thursdays immediately following school. Golfers in our Development Program select one day and play seven holes. On course play allows students to translate their skills from the practice range, develop course management strategies and learn the rules of golf on a course where they can be successful and have fun.
Professional Instruction: Certified PGA golf professionals work with students at the driving range, chipping areas and putting green once a week.
Matches: Over the season, all students participate in fun, intramural matches under a variety of formats (match play, scramble, etc.). In addition, many of our students will play in the St. Thomas Golf Invitational Tournament where St. Thomas competes against other area middle schools for individual and team prizes.
St. Thomas Invitational and Wildcat Open Golf Tournaments
Each fall, St. Thomas hosts its Invitational Golf Tournament, where Wildcat golfers face off against area middle schools in a friendly but competitive showcase of skill and sportsmanship. Another event, the Wildcat Open, brings the fun with a unique twist—this intramural tournament lets students compete in wacky, creative challenges on the course, like putting while blowing up a balloon, teeing off (almost) blindfolded and navigating golf balls through a maze of blocks. From serious swings to silly stunts, both tournaments give every golfer a chance to shine while having a blast.
