Basketball

text

St. Thomas offers an interscholastic basketball program beginning in 3rd grade. Every student who registers and commits to a team is given a place, regardless of skill level or prior experience. Teams are primarily assembled by grade and compete in the St. Sebastian Diocesan Basketball League, a structured league consisting of area Catholic schools. In addition, teams play in a variety of tournaments throughout the season. Both boys’ and girls’ divisions are available for all grades.

Practices and games are held during the fall and winter months, with the season culminating in playoff tournaments and championship games. Special skills sessions are often offered in the summer and at the beginning of the season through partnership with external programs. Most basketball coaches are St. Thomas parents.

In the summer of 2025, St. Thomas completed a renovation of its school gymnasium, now named the Harding|Halas Arts and Athletics Center, including brand new, state-of-the-art flooring to enhance the athletic experience.

Celebrating 50 Years of Tradition

With a roster of more than 100 student-athletes each season, our basketball program continues to be a cornerstone of St. Thomas’ Athletics Program. In the last three St. Sebastian Diocesan Basketball League Playoffs (2023, 2024 and 2025), St. Thomas has had three of the four teams in the playoffs. In addition, our 4th grade girls' and boys' teams have won their division a number of times. In total, St. Thomas has 10 New England Championships including both the varsity boys' and junior varsity girls' teams as recently as 2025.

FCC Article on 2025 CYO Basketball Tournament

MIDDLETOWN, Conn.—Each spring, Catholic middle school basketball teams from each of the 12 Catholic dioceses across New England compete in the prestigious New England CYO Basketball Tournament. Boys' and girls' teams compete in two divisions: junior varsity (for 5th and 6th grades) and varsity (for 7th and 8th grades).

In each diocese, school teams compete in their own tournaments to determine which schools advance to the New England Championships to represent their diocese.

For the third consecutive year, St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School in Fairfield has sent three of the four teams from the Diocese of Bridgeport to the New England CYO Basketball Tournament. For the first time in recent history, two of those teams came home with a championship trophy.

The St. Thomas 8th grade boys' team beat St. Leo School from the Diocese of Worcester, MA, in the boys varsity final, while the St. Thomas 6th grade girls' team beat St. John School from the Diocese of Fall River, MA, to capture the girls junior varsity trophy.

One of the St. Thomas 8th grade girls' teams also represented the Diocese of Bridgeport at the CYO Tournament.

St. Thomas Basketball Tournament

The kick-off to the basketball season is the St. Thomas Basketball Tournament. Held in our school gymnasium during the first few weekends of November, this cherished event officially tips off the season and brings together students, families, alumni and parishioners for weekends filled with spirited competition, school pride and fellowship. The tournament features teams from across the region and includes divisions for multiple grade levels as well as Alumni Showcase games. It also ends with a "Fowl" Shooting Contest in partnership with the Knights of Columbus Council 2616. Contestants compete to win a Thanksgiving turkey, and for each turkey awarded, another turkey is donated to Operation Hope.

With enthusiastic fans packing the stands, school banners waving and music echoing through the gym, the atmosphere is electric.  Don't miss out on a unique K-8th grade experience!
