Middle School (6-8th)
textDisoDisover
Welcome to middle school, an exciting and transformative chapter in our Pre-K through 8th grade program where students take on new levels of independence, responsibility and intellectual growth. As students begin changing classes for each subject, they experience a more dynamic and focused learning environment. The academic pace increases with a greater emphasis on homework, tests, on-demand assessments and long-term projects. We introduce midterm and final exams starting in 6th grade, helping students build essential study habits and test-taking skills.
In addition to core academics, students attend twice-weekly classes in our Library Learning Commons where they deepen their research abilities and develop 21st century skills in instructional technology such as coding and virtual reality. Music classes shift towards improvisation and conversation, encouraging creativity and expression. Reading becomes a powerful tool for critical thinking and discussion, with texts ranging from contemporary works to Shakespeare. Our middle school program prepares students to take on the challenges of high school with confidence.
Math Levels
Our middle school math program is designed to meet students where they are and challenge them appropriately. With a strong foundation in problem-solving and fundamentals, students progress through a differentiated path that leads to one of three levels by 8th grade: Pre-Algebra, Algebra or Geometry. This flexible approach ensures each student is appropriately challenged and well-prepared for high school math and beyond. With small class sizes and dedicated support resources during and after school, each student can find their individual path.
Writing & Research
St. Thomas weaves writing and research across Science, Social Studies, Theology, Humanities and English, giving students the tools to think critically and communicate effectively. Students explore a range of writing genres—from persuasive essays and analytical responses to term papers, lab reports, Shark Tank presentations and more—all the while developing strong research habits. Students are taught to responsibly use today’s advanced tools, learning when and how to leverage technology and when to rely on their own thinking, ensuring academic integrity and digital literacy.
High School Preparedness
St. Thomas prepares students for high school by building strong executive functioning skills, such as time management, organization and project planning through long-term assignments, regular homework and in-depth reports. Midterm and final exams introduce students to effective study strategies and test-taking skills, while a strong emphasis on writing and public speaking builds confidence and clarity of expression. Small class sizes and a close-knit community ensure that every student is seen, supported and encouraged to participate actively, laying a strong foundation for success. Our guidance counselor provides personalized support throughout the high school application process, helping students explore options, prepare applications and find their best fit.
