Academics

At St. Thomas, education is more than academic instruction—it's the formation of the whole child in mind, body and spirit. Rooted in the Catholic faith, our academic approach centers on nurturing a strong moral foundation while guiding students to uncover their personal best, become lifelong learners and grow into responsible citizens.

"A STRONG START FOR BRIGHT MINDS" VIDEO

St. Thomas believes in fostering accountability from the earliest years, with a thoughtful increase in responsibility as students grow. From learning to care for classroom materials in Pre-K to managing increased homework, long-term projects and leadership roles in middle school, students are consistently encouraged to take ownership of their work, actions and choices. This progression prepares students not only for academic success, but also for broader responsibilities in high school and beyond.

Our academic program blends time-honored foundational skills with the demands of today's world. Handwriting, phonics, science discovery and math fluency are given strong emphasis in the primary years, progressing towards interdisciplinary learning in humanities and STEM, with an emphasis on digital and media literacy and collaborative problem-solving in the upper grades. We offer Spanish and French from kindergarten through 8th grade. Throughout all levels, the teachings of our Catholic faith are ever-present, not only in religion and theology classes but across the curriculum and school life, as we strive to form students who think and act with compassion, integrity and a deep sense of purpose.

We complement our academic programming with vibrant co-curricular opportunities in the arts, athletics and student life experiences. Musical and drama productions, public speaking and participating in community service are all part of the student experience at St. Thomas. Sports are a widespread activity. From our physical education classes and intramural sports to our Beyond the Bell instructional programs and ever-popular interscholastic team sports, students stay active at St. Thomas, developing strong relationships beyond the classroom. Other co-curricular programs incorporating leadership, service and academics abound after school. Our range of offerings encourages each student to explore new interests, develop their talents and find their personal best.

We begin with the Diocese of Bridgeport Curriculum Guidelines to ensure a cohesive, standards-based academic experience that supports our holistic mission. These standards are brought to life through our adopted and homegrown curriculum programs to help us align instruction with grade-level expectations, Catholic values and best practices in education, ensuring that our students are well-prepared for the next steps in their educational journey.
