The purpose of the St. Thomas Aquinas Student Council is to carry out the mission statement of the school, while at the same time raising funds and providing fun activities for the benefit of the school and the community. The Student Council is committed to providing the student body with leadership opportunities to improve the school, as well as a means to serve the community in which they exist. Whether that event is the annual Easter Basket Collection for the day-care center in Bridgeport run by Sister Therese Tremblay in Bridgeport, or a dress-down day for a particular local charity, the council’s mission is to allow our children to experience the wonderful feeling of giving to others. At times, these funds are also given back to the school community when a need is present.

Each year, the Student Council has sponsored the Talent Show, the Ice Cream Sundae sale, and the Art Show. Other past events have included a car wash, and various other dress-down days or coin collection days to benefit a local charity. Each year the Student Council provides the flowers for the May Crowning on the second Sunday in May for our parish.

This past year the St. Thomas Aquinas Student council awarded eight $50 savings bonds to those graduating 8th graders who truly emulated the spirit of St. Thomas Aquinas School. Over 175 Easter baskets were assembled for Sister Therese to use at her day-care center in Bridgeport. A donation was also made to the Norma Pfriem Cancer Center. The Student Council sponsored a Fun Day for students in grades 4-8 at The Rinks in Shelton.

The Student Council of St. Thomas Aquinas School is comprised of six incoming 8th grade board members who have been elected at the end of the school year by students in the 3rd through 7th grades. In addition, each homeroom, at the start of the new school year, elects a representative and an alternate to bring their ideas to the weekly board meetings. The board meets each Tuesday during lunch to plan for the all-Student Council meeting the next day. Each Wednesday before school begins at 7:30 a.m., the entire Student Council, that is representatives and board members, meet to vote and decide on upcoming projects and to voice student concerns and ideas. There are two staff members who oversee the council. This year they are Mrs. Joan Driggs and Mrs. Celeste Davis.

Board members for the 2008/09 school year who are here to serve your school community are:

President: Patrick Gutirrez
Vice-President: Matt Kiernan
Secretary: Casey Kral
Public Relations: Maggie Calcutt
Treasurer: Emily Harris

Students and staff are encouraged to share with the council suggestions or recommendations.
